ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A lot of families with little or no damage from Hurricane Matthew are stepping in to help those in worse situations.
Two women from the Nocatee area came together to create a volunteer effort called Hurricane Matthew Helping Hands, held at the Alligator Farm parking lot to help people in the St. Augustine area.
A lot of people cleaning up storm damage are able to eat Monday because of the volunteers and believe it or not, the two moms that created the effort only came up with the idea late Sunday afternoon.
There was an assembly line full of people who just wanted others to know they care.
The last thing the group wanted was for storm victims like Paul Smith to have to stop working and go search for something to eat.
“This is a blessing,” Smith said. “This is awesome.”
After News4Jax aired the group’s story, more volunteers went out, wanting to offer their time taking meals to people who couldn't get to where they were set up.
From power crews to people who lost their homes, the volunteers have made a big difference. The group said they plan to continue their efforts.
