JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Paxon senior Tyson Wright scored three touchdowns Friday to power the Eagles to a 30-7 victory over visiting rival Stanton in the Brain Bowl.
Hard rain left a sloppy, wet football field but that didn't stop Wright, who got the Eagles on the board in the first quarter and then helped put the game away in the second half.
"The rain played a little part," Paxon coach Steve Brown. "Our field held water pretty well. We had a problem with our irrigation system. The rain before the game made it worse. But that's what we're about. We're a ground and pound team. We got some big linemen. We're going to see how long we can ground and pound till they get tired."
Stanton took a 7-6 lead just before the half with a 10-yard touchdown from sophomore Kyle Butler to freshman Laterrian Moore.
But two second-half interceptions by senior DB Derrail Stephens helped Paxon stall any momentum the Blue Devils could muster.
The Eagles scored off one of those turnovers.
Akari Boss also scored for Paxon with a second effort on a 12-yard run in the third quarter to give the Eagles a 14-7 lead.
Wright's 52-yard touchdown run iced the victory with less than 5 minutes to play.
