JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – There are only 179 active players who have reached 1000 career points in all of Division 1 women's basketball. Two members of that group don the Green and White of Jacksonville University. Briona Brown and Sherranda Reddick are nearly inseparable both on and off the floor.
"I've been playing with Sherranda for three years now,” said Dolphins forward Briona Brown. "The bond on the court is definitely there. Off the court we spend time together whether it's movies with the team, hanging out in each other’s apartment or going to get something to eat."
Reddick and Brown are also closely related in the box score with Reddick averaging 12.5 points per game and Brown right on her tail with 12.4 ppg.
"She's definitely the big sister I never had said”, Redick, who attended Ribault High School. ”I love her for it and she takes care of me on the court as well as off the court.”
“We call them cornflake and milk,” said Dolphins head coach Yolett McPhee McCuin. “Sherranda being corn flake and Briona being milk because they go hand in hand. Bri does a great job of being a leader for everybody on the team and Sherranda looks up to her. At the same time Sherranda looks up to her and wants to win as bad as Bri.”
Not only do Brown and Reddick share a sisterly bond, they both perfected their game thanks to a healthy dosage of brotherly love.
“My brothers are a big reason why I love basketball,” said Reddick. “We always played every Sunday at the park. They would never take it easy on me. We would play teams and they wouldn't even pick me.”
Brown grew up with three brothers and they never took it easy on her. “We grew up playing on concrete,” said Brown. “It was either you don't want to play or you're going to get pushed around the concrete and that’s how you become tough.”
Brown went on to say that individual success is fine but as a senior she's focused on leaving a legacy. And the only way to do that is get a banner to hang up in the gym.
