Edward Waters stuns nationally ranked Virginia Union, now 3-0 for first time

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Edward Waters University pulled off one of the biggest wins in program history, nailing a field goal as time ran out to stun nationally ranked Virginia Union 41-38 on Saturday.

Ryan Gagne booted a 35-yard field goal to win it and send the Tigers to their first 3-0 start.

Johntarrious Thomas rushed for 132 yards and a couple touchdowns on 18 carries to power EWU on the ground. Noah Bodden passed for 283 yards (19 of 35) and a touchdown.

EWU took a 31-17 lead three and a half minutes into the fourth quarter on a 27-yard field goal by Gagne, but the 13th-ranked Panthers raced back to knot things at 31-all with 4:09 left. Kieren Jackson had a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the ensuing kick but Virginia Union managed to tie things up again with 1:20 to go.

Interim head coach Brian Jenkins and the Tigers head to Bethune-Cookman University next. Jenkins is a former BCU coach who went 46-14 during his time there.
