1. Ponte Vedra (2-0-1), Class 5A
Quality wins: Bartram Trail, Chiles.
Notable: The reigning Class 5A state champs are out to an excellent start. They opened with a scoreless tie against powerhouse Montverde, blanked a quality Chiles (2-0) and then edged reigning 6A state champ Bartram Trail (2-1). Lake Highland Prep on Friday is up next for future hall of fame coach Dave Silverberg. Lulu Consunji and Lily Morse open the season on the player of the year watch list.
2. St. Johns Country Day (3-0-1), Class 1A
Quality win: P.K. Yonge
Notable: Another reigning state champ, the Spartans opened the season with a 3-all tie against 6A defending state champ Bartram Trail. Head coach Mike Pickett, another coach bound for multiple halls of fame when his days are through, has yet another team that will challenge for a state championship. They’ve got a tough stretch across the next week (Bishop Kenny on Friday, Episcopal on Monday and Ponte Vedra on Nov. 20). Victoria Sarka has five goals and two assists. Calli Berang also has a goal and a pair of assists.
3. Creekside (4-0), Class 7A
Quality wins: Bishop Kenny, Fletcher, Gulf Breeze, Viera.
Notable: Very strong start for the Knights, who were unbeaten last year until losing in a regional final shocker in PKs. Creekside hasn’t lost a regular season match since Jan. 19, 2022 (2-1 to Ponte Vedra). Creekside has enough returning firepower (Sarah Weisberg, Camila Adame, Jaclyn Bessman, Logan Griffin, Hailey Smith) for a championship run, but the key for a title is the development of some of its younger players.
4. Bartram Trail (1-1-1), Class 6A
Quality win: Spruce Creek.
Notable: The Bears dropped a 2-1 thriller to No. 1 Ponte Vedra on Wednesday night, but they’re still a very strong pick to play on well into the season. They’ve got four state championships under head coach Jennifer Rodriguez. Junior F Layla Davis is leading the offense now (three goals, assist). Sophomore MF Valentina Lopez has a couple assists for the Bears.
5. Episcopal (2-0), Class 2A
Quality wins: None.
Notable: The Eagles are coming off the best season in program history during a run to the championship game. They graduated star GK Ava Galani, but there’s enough left in this lineup for another deep run. Lila Ranalli is the leading returning goal scorer for the Eagles and Maddie Smith is back as the veteran in the defense.
6. Bishop Kenny (2-1), Class 4A
Quality win: Stanton.
Notable: The Crusaders finished 16-3-2 last year and reached the state semifinals. The early part of the schedule is tough. Kenny dropped a 3-1 game to Creekside earlier this week. They visit No. 2 St. Johns Country Day on Thursday and then take a trip to No. 1 Ponte Vedra on Nov. 18. Stella Jones has found the net five times already after a 12-goal, 11-assist junior season. Freshman Shea Donovan has scored four times. The record won’t look pretty in the opening month, but Kenny is still a pick to play on deep into the postseason. They last won a state title in 2020.
On the bubble
Beachside (4-0, Class 5A); Bolles (1-2-1, Class 3A); Flagler Palm Coast (5-0, Class 7A); Providence (3-0-2), Class 2A).
