1. Tocoi Creek (3-0, Class 6A)
Quality wins: Hilliard, Jackson.
Notable: The Toros are really good. They’re coming off a state semifinal appearance and return two top shelf players in G Gabi Iturralde (13.5 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 4.8 apg) and wing Audrey Beyer (19.5, 5.2 rpg). F/C Asiana McCreary (9 ppg, 5.2 rpg) is also back to give Tocoi Creek some more presence in the paint. Their first tough local test comes at Creekside on Dec. 2.
2. Bolles (1-1, Class 3A)
Quality win: Orange Park.
Notable: Last year’s state runner-up graduated player of the year Abby Knauff but returns a good bit of talent. C Terrell McCoy and G Presley Norman are the big ones, but Bolles has more than that. Evie Freeman, Ari Walker, Leila Goll and Angelina Laudicina are the others who can get up and score. The one loss came to Potter’s House, which is an independent team and not eligible for the Varsity rankings.
3. Bishop Kenny (2-0, Class 4A)
Quality win: Orlando First Academy.
Glance: A 59-45 win over a First Academy team that’s coming off a 23-5 season is the start the Crusaders need. Juniors Elle Deegan (17.5 ppg, 7.5 rpg) and Kathleen Crawley (15 ppg, 8 rpg) are powering Kenny. They’ve got Cardinal Mooney and Dillard this week at the Insider Exposure tournament at San Jose Prep.
4. Providence (2-0, Class 2A)
Quality wins: Spruce Creek, Trinity Catholic.
Notable: The Stallions are off to a good start, laying the hammer to a pair of playoff teams from last year to open the season. The Stallions are in search of their third straight trip to the state semifinals, and they’ve got a strong team back. That includes stars at G (Kennedy Loux), F (Kasey Davey) and C (Julianna Baskin).
5. Beachside (1-0, Class 5A)
Quality wins: None.
Notable: G Morgan Cremen is one of the area’s top players, and she’s back for what should be the best season in Barracudas history. She had 40 in a season-opening, 84-15 romp over Mandarin. This week, they’ve got Dillard (Monday), Lakeland (Tuesday) and Camden County (Wednesday) before Thanksgiving break.
6. North Florida Educational (1-0, Class 1A)
Quality wins: None.
Notable: The Eagles reached the state championship game last year under the coaching duo of Tony and Antoinette Bannister. And that team was young. Leading scorer Sawsan Kamara (14.1 ppg), Jorrdann Sibley (9.7 ppg) and Jannell Houston (9.4 ppg, 8.3 rpg) are all back to power an NFEI team that again has title expectations.
