1. Jackson (3-0, Class 3A)
Quality wins: Florida High, Ponte Vedra.
Notable: Solid start for the Tigers and head coach Byron Shemwell. They’ve picked up big wins over Florida High (80-48) and Ponte Vedra (66-62) to start the season. The Seminoles were 21-6 a year ago and the Sharks are coming off a state runner-up season. Javion Davis (14.3 ppg, 6 rpg), Donald Hackworth (14 ppg, 8.3 rpg), Terrell Mosely II (9.3 ppg) and King Sanders (9 ppg) have led the team early.
2. Tocoi Creek (2-0, Class 6A)
Quality win: Bishop Kenny.
Notable: How do the Toros follow up last year’s run to the state semifinals with a much larger target on their jersey? They clipped an always tough BK (61-60) to open the season and then drummed Bishop Snyder (73-51) after that.
3. Providence (2-1, Class 2A)
Quality win: Bolles.
Notable: The Stallions dropped a 62-61 game to a quality 7A Olympia team at the Sun Bash tournament in Orlando on Monday night, but not much cause for concern. Unlike last year when it felt like this team was super young, head coach Jim Martin has a lot returning. C Colton Nuualiitia, F Will Rydzewski and Gs Ryan Gornto, William Stewart and Luke Mayberry are all back. Transfer G Marvin Christie should provide more scoring and ball handling for a team that has final four expectations.
4. Impact Christian (3-0, Class 1A)
Quality win: Creekside.
Notable: Solid start for the Lions, who have three blowout wins and are outscoring teams significantly (80.6 to 47.7) to open the season. Frandy Perez, Ronald Clark, Mechack Olungu and Jeremiah Jones are averaging 10.3 ppg or more.
5. Ponte Vedra (2-1, Class 5A)
Quality win: None.
Notable: The Sharks played for a state championship last year in lost in a tense, tough game. They’ve got one of the area’s top players back in Maddox Palmer (21.3 ppg, 6 rpg). Tyler Kroog and Ryan Speace have been very good behind Palmer in offense so far (both averaging 15 ppg). The expectations don’t change from year to year for the Sharks. They expect to reach the final four, which they have four consecutive seasons.
6. University Christian (1-1, Class 2A)
Quality win: Ribault.
Notable: The Christians graduated quite a bit from last year’s final four team, but they’ve already notched a quality W over Ribault to open the year. DaMarri Young-Grant, Preston Pride and Wayne Castle have been the scoring leaders to start the season, all at 10 ppg or better.
Keep an eye on
Bishop Kenny (2-1, Class 4A); Christ’s Church (3-1, Class 1A); Episcopal (3-0, 3A); Fleming Island (1-1, Class 5A); Nease (2-0, Class 6A); Ribault (2-1, 4A).
