Episcopal boys soccer team wins in PKs, heads to state championship game

Episcopal’s dream boys soccer season continued in the Class 2A state semifinals on Tuesday night.

The Eagles took top-seeded Tampa Prep to penalty kicks and won 4-3 in an unbelievable showdown at the Lake Myrtle Sports Complex in Auburndale.

The game went into PKs tied 1-all.

Goalkeeper Drew Monti hit the go-ahead PK, then watched as Tampa Prep’s fifth and final kicker sent the potential tying kick well over the goal post to give Episcopal a heart-stopping win.

The Eagles (22-0-3) will face Melbourne Holy Trinity Episcopal (16-1-1) on Wednesday night at 7 for the 2A state championship. It is the Eagles’ first trip to the final.

Monti stopped the first PK, but officials allowed Tampa Prep another attempt, which it hit. Charlie DeVooght, Cade Cummings and Mason Glynn hit PKs before Monti.
