Mandarin boys soccer team gets revenge on Mitchell, moves into soccer championship

The Mandarin boys soccer team got a measure of revenge on Monday night.

The Mustangs topped New Port Richey Mitchell 2-1 in the Class 6A state semifinals at the Spec Martin Stadium in DeLand to reach their second straight state title game. Mitchell beat Mandarin 1-0 for the championship last year.

Robert Calazans and Chauncy Rutherford scored goals in the first 15 minutes to give Mandarin a lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

Ed White (1981), Stanton (1996, 2010), Fletcher (1998, 2018), and Mandarin (2012, 2025) are among the Gateway Conference teams that have played for championships. Public schools from Duval County are 0-7 in those championship games.
