Union County pulled off a miraculous rally in the final two innings, walking off with its first baseball state championship in more than a decade in unforgettable fashion.
The Tigers scored three runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, to stun Trenton 10-9 for the Rural title in the most improbable state championship in recent memory.

Union County’s championship was the second in program history joining its 2012 Class 1A title.
Evan Carter’s shallow fly ball to right field with the bases loaded in the eighth wasn’t that deep, but Wesley Crockett took off from third to try and score. The play at the plate would have been close, but a Trenton player cut off the throw and Crockett slid home to win it.
The Tigers were down 9-6 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, and down to their last strike on three occasions. Erick Lasseter drove in a run to make it 9-7. Evan Christmas, who was hitless on the day, drove a two-strike pitch over the right-fielder’s head for an RBI double. Jasen Sullivan’s grounder to shortstop should have been an easy out, but a throwing error allowed him to reach base, tying things at 9-all.
