PUNE, India - The western Indian city of Pune was battered by 140 mm (5.5 inches) of rain in 48 hours this week, in what the Maharashtra state chief minister called an "unprecedented" level of monsoon rain. Other cities like Kolkata, in India's West Bengal state, are also experiencing heavy monsoon rain and floods this week. Even major cities like Chennai and Mumbai suffered from severe water shortages, with reservoirs drying up and government tankers bringing in emergency water every week. This sudden, heavy rainfall has left hundreds dead or displaced.

The resulting fire at the factory in Dhule district, in the state of Maharashtra, has now been contained, while a search operation is ongoing, police told CNN. Six people were initially believed to have been killed, but more bodies were found during the search operation, while some injured people died at hospital. Sanjay Ahire, a senior police official, told CNN: "From our initial investigation it appears a boiler exploded which led to a massive fire in the factory." India's Home Minister, Amit Shah, tweeted: "Anguished to learn about the loss of lives due to explosion at a chemical factory in Dhule, Maharashtra, adding, "state govt is doing everything possible to assist the people in need.

(CNN) - A four-story building has collapsed in the Indian city of Mumbai, killing at least 10 people and leaving up to 25 trapped inside. The building collapsed in the Dongri neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon, said Tanaji Kamble, a spokesman for Mumbai's civic authority. Maryam Abdul Kareem, 67, who lives across from building, told CNN that she watched the building crumble from her balcony. "The building collapsed in front of my eyes ... it completely collapsed to the ground."

Google Maps(CNN) - At least 23 people have died, 1,000 residents have been evacuated and some public services have been suspended as India's largest city, Mumbai, experiences its worst rains in a decade. Mumbai's local government declared Tuesday a public holiday as the financial hub continued to be hit by heavy monsoon rains. The Indian Navy deployed teams in the city "to provide relief to rain hit and stranded Mumbaikars," officials tweeted. "Pained to know about the loss of lives in (the) Malad wall collapse incident," Devendra Fadnavis, the chief minister of Maharashtra state, where Mumbai is located, tweeted. Heaviest rains in a decadeAlthough Mumbai experiences monsoon season every year, rain on Monday and Tuesday was the heaviest in more than a decade.
