Actress Diahann Carroll, who famously starred on Julia, has died at the age of 84. Carroll died from complications from breast cancer at her home in West Hollywood, California, her publicist told the New York Times. 7 on the Nielsens rating in its first season, and Carroll received a Golden Globe for her role and an Emmy nomination. In 1974, Carroll starred in the movie Claudine, for which she later earned a best actor nomination. Carroll, who was originally from the Bronx, is survived by her daughter, journalist Suzanne Kay Bamford.

Diahann Carroll, the first black woman to star in a non-servant role in a TV, has died. Carroll's daughter, Susan Kay, said her mother died of cancer Friday in Los Angeles, according to The Associated Press. Carroll, perhaps best known for her work on "Julia" during her long career, earned a Tony Award for the musical "No Strings" and an Academy Award nomination for best actress for "Claudine."
