'The Mandalorian' powers Disney's launch into streaming

HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - It's early days for Disney+, but the opening original-programming salvo for the new streaming service looks a whole lot like "The Mandalorian" -- the first live-action "Star Wars" series -- and the seven dwarfs. Disney hasn't made "The Mandalorian" available for review, unconvincingly citing a desire to ensure that all its surprises remain spoiler-free. Based on previews, the company certainly appears to have brought feature-film production values to the project, but time will tell. Kristen Bell hosts and produces this show that brings together former high school classmates to restage a musical from their younger days. "High School Musical: The Musical: The Series" premieres Nov. 8 on ABC, Disney Channel and Freeform.

"I don't know anything for sure, but I definitely don't think that that's an impossibility." For Cameron, the silent but looming shadow of Boyce's absence would make it difficult to bring the series back. "I don't love the idea of doing it without Cameron, I don't know what the plot would be and I don't know what it would look like," she admitted. "But I also love the franchise and I love [director] Kenny [Ortega], and I love Disney and I love that cast. Skai Jackson is getting real about growing up as a Disney Channel child star. Jackson, who began her career as a child model, starred on Disney's Jessie in 2011 alongside Debby Ryan, Peyton List and the late Cameron Boyce. But I never got to have a full conversation of how, you know, being a child star is. I think that's a good idea." I would get really, really sad."

CNN video(CNN) - Disney Channel dedicated the Friday premiere of "Descendants 3" to its late star, Cameron Boyce. Boyce was 20 when he died in his sleep last month due to epilepsy. He played Cruella de Vil's teenage son, Carlos, in the "Descendants" franchise, which follows the children of Disney villains. Disney Channel canceled the red carpet premiere for "Descendants 3" last month, saying that its parent company would instead donate to the Thirst Project, a nonprofit Boyce was heavily involved in that provides communities with safe drinking water. Outside of his Disney roles, Boyce also appeared in "Eagle Eye" alongside Shia LaBeouf and "Grown Ups" with Adam Sandler.

'Descendants 3' sees its musical magic starting to fade

Read full article: 'Descendants 3' sees its musical magic starting to fade

CNN video(CNN) - The tragic death of Cameron Boyce cast an unexpected cloud over "Descendants 3," the latest edition of the Disney Channel musicals built around the kids of Disney heroes and villains. The show goes on, yielding an at-best serviceable addition to a promising concept that's beginning to feel worn and tired. Mal and her pals (played by Boyce, Sofia Carson and Booboo Stewart) are still trying to mainstream the Villain Kids and bring them over when a crisis strikes. It also continues its youth-oriented network's streak of spinning ratings gold out of live-action musicals, after the "High School Musical" and "Teen Beach Movie" franchises. But setting that aside, whatever magic "Descendants" initially possessed, this third time around the spell is pretty clearly fading.
