JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville’s Eureka Gardens apartment complex could officially have new ownership later this summer, according to a new financial filing from its current owners. Global Ministries Foundation, the Memphis-based nonprofit that owns Eureka Gardens and other complexes subsidized through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Section 8 program, listed the property for sale more than two years ago. Millennia Housing Development is in the process of buying Eureka Gardens and GMF’s 36 other Section 8 properties. Millennia is preparing for a $40 million rehabilitation of Eureka Gardens and three of the other properties it is buying in Jacksonville. The Ohio-based real estate company took over day-to-day management of Eureka Gardens in February 2017.

Global Ministries Preservation of Affordability Corp. spokeswoman Audrey Young sent a statement saying it planned to appeal the REAC's Notice of Default. After decades of neglect by previous owners, GMF has invested over $3 million in restoration of Eureka Gardens, including restoration of its critical infrastructure. City Councilman Garrett Dennis, whose district includes Eureka Gardens, was the first city official to react to the latest inspection report. Rubio and U.S. Rep. Al Lawson, D-Tallahassee, both said that 18 months with no improvements to the conditions at Eureka Gardens is unacceptable. Lawson said that the people living at Eureka Gardens are just like other Americans: They just want a clean, affordable, safe place to call home.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla – Democratic Congressman Alan Grayson stopped by the troubled Eureka Gardens Apartments on Sunday while he was campaigning ahead of the August primary. Grayson's visit comes after an I-Team investigation into the deplorable living conditions at the apartment complex. Today, it was Grayson - a U.S. Senate candidate - seeing Eureka Gardens up close. Reverend Richard Hamlet - the founder of Global Ministries Foundation, which owns the complex - has come under fire for the unsafe living conditions. "What we're seeing is a whole large neighborhood, community, that's been victimized by an absentee slumlord," Grayson said.

Curry wants to discuss deplorable living conditions at the Eureka Gardens and Washington Heights housing complexes -- conditions the I-TEAM exposed seven months ago. Ahead of the trip, the I-TEAM visited with tenants at Eureka Gardens, who cheered on the mayor's efforts to improve their living conditions. The city confirmed last month that all the interior code violations found at Eureka Gardens had been fixed.
