(AP Photo/Alex Brandon)WASHINGTON – The Senate on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved President Joe Biden's pick to oversee the Small Business Administration, an agency that has seen its portfolio expand in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Guzman is a former Obama administration SBA official who currently heads California’s Office of the Small Business Advocate. In that role, she oversaw efforts to help that state’s small businesses survive the pandemic. The Small Business Administration oversees loan programs to help businesses recover from natural disasters, enhances access to capital through loan guarantees and provides training and technical assistance. Guzman said she would work to ensure money gets into the hands of the small businesses hurt the most by the pandemic and the economic crisis through no fault of their own.

Distrust of authority fuels virus misinformation for Latinos

Read full article: Distrust of authority fuels virus misinformation for Latinos

While bad information about the virus is a problem for everyone, it can pose a particular threat to communities of people of color who alreadyface worse outcomes from the virus. Other studies also show Latinos in some areas are also twice as likely to die from the illness. Added to this already dangerous mix is a higher level of distrust in authority among Latinos as is the case for other minority communities that is helping fuel the spread of misinformation about the virus. That forces some Latinos who need information in Spanish to rely on less-trusted sources like social media. Feli-Mjer says it's just as important to control rumors as it is to control the virus.

US officials want $12.6 billion from El Chapo

Read full article: US officials want $12.6 billion from El Chapo

(CNN) - Federal prosecutors want drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to forfeit more than $12.6 billion to the United States government, a court filing shows. "It's insane to think that Guzman would have all that money," said Mariel Colon, one of Guzman's attorneys. During the trial, another of Guzman's attorneys Jeffrey Lichtman, pointed to testimony from former cartel associates who said Guzman had money problems. "This is largely an academic exercise as the government has never located or identified even a penny of this $12.7 billion in proceeds supposedly generated by Mr. Guzman," Lichtman said Friday. Guzman is currently being held in federal prison in Manhattan.

New York judge rejects 'El Chapo' Guzman's bid for new trial

Read full article: New York judge rejects 'El Chapo' Guzman's bid for new trial

(CNN) - A federal judge in New York Wednesday denied drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's bid for a new trial. The count of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise carries a mandatory term of life in prison. Defense attorney Jeff Lichtman, in a statement, said Wednesday that the ruling further demonstrated the trial "was more of an inquisition, a show trial, than an exercise in true American justice." In March, Guzman's attorneys asked Cogan for a new trial and to recall the jurors back for an evidentiary hearing to find out if there had been misconduct. Prosecutors responded that the court's repeated instruction to jurors, their diligence during the trial, and overwhelming evidence against Guzman show that "the alleged media exposure did not prejudice the defendant."
