8 years later, Sandy still costing transit systems billions

Read full article: 8 years later, Sandy still costing transit systems billions

Once a gleaming symbol of early 20th-century ambition and prosperity, the grand rail terminal now sits as a somber reminder of the daunting challenges facing mass transit in the New York region. Billions of dollars in projects to protect transit infrastructure from future flooding are unfinished, as transit agencies face the parallel challenge of continuing to operate amid gaping budget holes caused by the pandemic. It’s a heavy burden for a region where millions of people rely on public transit systems that have been buffeted by multiple major crises: the Sept. 11 terror attacks, Sandy and now COVID-19. Like other transit projects around the region — though not all — the final stages have actually been speeded along by the pandemic because of curtailed train service. NJ Transit got the federal funding for those and other projects after Sandy — but suffered from under-investment by the state, attrition of top management and a lack of long-term planning.

Will long Labor Day weekend mean another coronavirus spike?

Read full article: Will long Labor Day weekend mean another coronavirus spike?

I look upon the Labor Day weekend really as a critical point," said Dr. Anthony Fauci, the governments top infectious-disease expert. And a few states are heading into the holiday with less room in hospitals than they had over Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. More beaches will be open on Labor Day than on Memorial Day, but Fauci said that is not cause in itself for concern, as long as people keep their distance. I would rather see someone on a beach, being physically separated enough, than someone crowded in an indoor bar, he said. Cases of COVID-19, which spiked from about 20,000 per day to around 70,000 during the summertime surge in the South, are now down to about 40,000.

"The decline in wild Chinese giant salamander numbers has been catastrophic, mainly due to recent overexploitation for food," Turvey said. Crowdfunding campaigns for cancer care often fall short

Read full article: Crowdfunding campaigns for cancer care often fall short

Allison Joyce/Getty ImagesHOBOKEN, N.J. - The cost of cancer treatment has gotten so high that patients and their families are turning to crowdfunding websites, like GoFundMe. But a new study found that cancer patients raising money on GoFundMe are only reaching about a quarter of their goal on average. Researchers looked at both insured and uninsured patients. Underinsured or uninsured patients sought higher donation amounts, and received only about 19% of their goal on average. "Although the Affordable Care Act reduced the uninsured rate, cost containment measures have not been realized by all patients," the study noted.
