Jay Inslee activated hundreds of National Guard troops to help state police keep order at the state Capitol. Because of concerns about the coronavirus, many state capitols had already adopted procedures to curb the potential for large crowds, including arranging for lawmakers to meet remotely. In Michigan, a state commission voted Monday to ban the open carrying of weapons in the Capitol building. Oregon state police will conduct building security training for those who work at the state Capitol, including journalists, on Tuesday and Wednesday. Michigan lawmakers are to return to session Wednesday.

(AP Photo/Andrew Harnik)NEW YORK – After months of avoiding direct contact with voters because of the pandemic, Joe Biden's campaign is about to launch door-to-door canvassing across several battleground states. Biden’s campaign, which detailed the new effort to The Associated Press, insists that its existing phone and online voter outreach is effective. “Our voter contact operation is the most innovative and technologically advanced of any presidential campaign in history, and it has been thriving in this unprecedented environment," Biden campaign manager Jenn O'Malley Dillon said. They know they're being hopelessly outworked on the ground, and down-ballot Democrats in key states have been freaking out about it,” Trump campaign spokesman Tim Murtaugh said. Biden volunteers in Pennsylvania and Nevada began dropping campaign literature at voters' homes just last weekend, although they were instructed to avoid any direct conversations.

Bicyclists ride on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights, N.J. on May 15, 2020, the on the first day it opened during the coronavirus outbreak. It and another popular Jersey Shore beach, Point Pleasant Beach, were among those allowing people back onto the sand with some restrictions to try to slow the spread of the virus. On Friday, local governments gave the signal and beachgoers returned to the sand at some of New Jersey's most popular beaches, including Seaside Heights and Point Pleasant Beach. Yet despite the teen migration, things were decidedly under control at Seaside Heights, a place with a reputation for not always being so. Phil Murphy gave guidance to shore towns on how to reopen their beaches safely amid the virus pandemic.
