Borrowers who have defaulted on their student loans will no longer be at risk of having their Social Security benefits garnished, an Education Department spokesperson said Tuesday.

The U.S. Education Department reopened online applications Wednesday for income-driven repayment plans for student loan borrowers.

President-elect Donald Trump has not said what he would do on student loan forgiveness, leaving millions of borrowers facing uncertainty over what will happen with their payments once President Joe Biden leaves office.

The 12-month grace period for student loan borrowers came to an end on Sept. 30.
