Close to two dozen people were hurt during a large explosion at a South Florida shopping plaza Saturday. The blast destroyed part of a shopping center in Plantation, west of Fort Lauderdale in Broward County. Authorities are not entirely sure what caused the blast, but emergency responders found an active gas leak when they arrived. There were large pieces of concrete hurled up to 50 yards away and sent pieces of metal scattering as far as 100 yards across the street, which resulted in 21 people being taken to hospitals. "A search has been completed of the building itself," said Joel Gordon, battalion chief of the Plantation Fire Department.

The Plantation Fire Department initially said a gas explosion had occurred, but later said they are still working to confirm the cause. "At this point, we have not actually confirmed that it was an explosion due to gas," Gordon said. Gordon told CNN the access road to the mall was covered in debris when firefighters arrived. Restaurants would get a tax credit for setting up baby-changing tables, under a measure proposed Wednesday by Sen. Lauren Book, a Plantation Democrat who gave birth to twins in February. The proposal (SB 236) would offer a tax credit equal to the cost of a changing table --- not including the cost of installation --- or $300, whichever is less. Credits would be available for up to two tables per restaurant. Earlier this month, Book also filed a bill (SB 56) that would provide a sales-tax exemption on diapers, along with incontinence undergarments, pads and liners. During the 2017 session, Book co-sponsored legislation that would have eliminated sales taxes on diapers, but the proposal did not make a final tax-cut package.
