An outburst of flooding from a lake dammed by Juneau’s Mendenhall Glacier damaged at least an estimated 100 homes in what has become a perennial hazard for nearby neighborhoods.

PHILADELPHIA (CNN) - Attempted murder charges were filed Saturday against a Philadelphia man accused of shooting six police officers during an hours-long standoff, according to court records. The formal charges, including multiple counts of aggravated assault and assault of a law enforcement officer, were filed three days after Hill allegedly barricaded himself in a North Philadelphia row house when police attempted to serve a narcotics warrant. The Philadelphia District Attorney's office declined comment, saying prosecutors will announce charges against Hill and four others at a news conference Monday. Before the standoff, the suspect already had a 12-page criminal record with charges including burglary, aggravated assault and taunting a police animal. Negotiators tried to communicate with the suspect, but initially he was picking up the phone and not responding, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross said.

(CNN) - A man who police say shot at officers during a standoff that lasted nearly eight hours in Philadelphia has been identified as Maurice Hill, Philadelphia Police Commissioner Richard Ross told CNN. At one point during the incident, the police commissioner said, the suspect was in contact with his girlfriend via video chat. Johnson told CNN affiliate KYW that he is Hill's former attorney. "He did not want this to end violently," Johnson told the station, adding, "I told him you got to surrender now, you know, in short you have to surrender." Johnson engaged the suspect in conversation, Ross said, but police ultimately used tear gas to force the suspect out of the house.

KYWPHILADELPHIA - A gunman who opened fire on police Wednesday as they were serving a drug warrant in Philadelphia, wounding six officers and triggering a standoff that extended into the night, is in police custody, authorities said. Eric Gripp said early Thursday morning that the man was taken into custody after an hourslong standoff with police. Three people who officers had taken into custody in the house before the shooting started were also safely evacuated, police said. "We're doing everything within our power to get him to come out," Ross said during the standoff. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said its agents responded to the scene to assist Philadelphia police.
