President Donald Trump's controversial nominee to the Federal Reserve is facing a razor-close vote in Congress. The Senate is voting Tuesday on the nomination of Judy Shelton to join the Federal Reserve's powerful board of governors. The Trump White House has at times struggled to get its nominees on the Fed board. “I think her views are too extreme,” said Richard Fisher, former president of the Dallas Federal Reserve, said Tuesday on CNBC after the Senate vote. The central bank operates by consensus and Fed governors rarely dissent from interest rate decisions, though Fed bank presidents do.

In addition to Shelton, Trump has nominated Christopher Waller, research director at the St. Louis Federal Reserve Bank, for a second vacancy on the seven-member Fed board.
