Read full article: Report points to COVID-19 improvements in Florida nursing homes

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida has made improvements in curtailing the spread of COVID-19 in nursing homes, according to an AARP report released Thursday. In the four weeks ending Oct. 18, Florida nursing homes reported an average of two active COVID-19 cases for every 100 residents, better than the nationwide average of 2.8 active cases per 100 residents and a significant improvement from a prior rate of 4.5 cases per 100 residents. The report is the third edition that AARP has published and is based on data self-reported by nursing homes to the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services between Sept. 21 and Oct. 18. AARP Florida State Director Jeff Johnson warned that the recent uptick of COVID-19 cases could have adverse impacts for Florida nursing homes. The latest update showed Florida nursing homes made improvements in all five areas from a September report and performed better than the national averages.

Older workers face higher unemployment amid virus pandemic

Read full article: Older workers face higher unemployment amid virus pandemic

In every recession since the 1970s, older workers had persistently lower unemployment rates than midcareer workers — partly because of seniority benefits. But in the current recession, older workers experienced higher unemployment rates than midcareer workers in each month since the onset of the pandemic. The older workers’ unemployment rates from April through September were 1.1 percentage points higher than mid-career workers — at 9.7% versus 8.6%. “The higher rate of unemployment for older workers might be because this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for employers to shed older workers and not fear investigation by the labor department," Ghilarducci said. The researchers who conducted the new study recommended that Congress increase and extend unemployment benefits for older workers, discourage withdrawals from retirement accounts, lower Medicare eligibility to 50 and create a federal Older Workers Bureau to promote the welfare of older workers.

Moreover, the rate of infected staff members in Florida nursing homes was 3.9 per 100 residents, exceeding the national average of 2.5 per 100 residents. AARP Florida spokesman Dave Bruns said Florida is the “grayest” state in the nation. That figure includes residents of nursing homes, assisted living facilities and intermediate care facilities for people with developmental disabilities. The AARP dashboard shows that Florida had a higher percentage of nursing homes with active cases of COVID-19 positive residents, 47 percent, than the national rate of 24 percent. Nationally, 28 percent of nursing homes reported having less than a week’s worth of so-called PPE on hand during the four-week period.

Report: Drug prices for seniors again rise faster than inflation

Read full article: Report: Drug prices for seniors again rise faster than inflation

This is lower than the drug price increases observed in previous years, but it's a tepid improvement. Republicans have long opposed allowing the government to negotiate drug prices. Trump, who campaigned on a promise to lower drug prices, has said in the past that drug companies were "getting away with murder." During Azar's tenure with Lilly, the company was accused of routinely increasing drug prices. 'This is simply unsustainable'AARP's Purvis noted that increasing drug prices don't just impact the people who take them.
