JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 40-year-old father of four who died Monday night after a crash in the Lackawanna neighborhood on the Westside was less than a block from home when he was hit while riding his scooter.
Clinton Dale Andrews was hit by a Jeep just before 11 p.m. at the intersection of Spring and Webster streets, according to police. Andrews was not wearing a helmet and died from his injuries.
Andrews' girlfriend, Michelle Houston, said she watched him take his last breaths just a few feet from their home.
“He's the best man I've ever been with in my whole life,” Houston said. “He was a good man, and the world really just missed out. The world lost a good man, a really good man.”
Police said the driver of the SUV stopped at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation.
Andrews' niece, Jessela Sarabia, said the driver ran a stop sign at the intersection of Spring and Webster streets. Police did not confirm or deny that, saying that it’s an ongoing investigation.
“Nobody should ever have to go through that. Nobody,” Sarabia said. “I can only imagine how he felt or what was going through his mind when he took his last breath, you know what I mean? It's devastating.”
Andrews' family remembers him as a passionate man who loved painting and staying active.
“His sweetness. His kindness. The good-hearted person that he was. He helped everybody. He would give you the shirt off his back, and for him to be killed just like this,” said Andrews' sister, Tammy Sarabia.
Andrews' family set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for the unexpected funeral costs.
