JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Transportation officials are reminding drivers to stay alert and plan ahead as St. Patrick’s Day celebrations and spring break travel increase traffic on Northeast Florida roads.

Florida Department of Transportation spokesperson Jacob Pickering said the holiday often brings an increase in crashes related to impaired driving.

“St. Patrick’s Day does hold a rise of crashes due to impaired driving,” Pickering said. “The good news is these crashes are preventable.”

Pickering encourages people celebrating the holiday to plan ahead by choosing a designated driver before leaving home.

“Celebrate the holiday, but celebrate safely,” he said.

AAA has activated its Tow-to-Go service for those who find themselves stuck without a designated driver on St. Patrick’s Day.

The service, which provides a free, confidential ride and vehicle tow to a safe location for impaired drivers, will be available from 6 p.m. Monday, March 16, through 6 a.m. Wednesday, March 18.

Officials say drivers should also be aware that celebrations often start earlier in the day on St. Patrick’s Day, meaning impaired drivers could be on the road both during the day and at night.

Spring break travel also brings more drivers — including visitors unfamiliar with local roads — to Northeast Florida highways.

Pickering said that means motorists should take extra precautions while driving.

He encourages drivers to eliminate distractions by putting phones on “Do Not Disturb” or using driving mode.

“Do stay alert when you’re on the roadways,” Pickering said.

He also advises drivers to stay patient behind the wheel and avoid road rage.

With many gatherings taking place throughout the month, Pickering said party hosts can also help prevent impaired driving.

“If you’re hosting a party this month, consider having a non-alcoholic option or mocktail for those who have to drive,” he said.

He also recommends arranging transportation ahead of time using rideshare services.

“Think ahead and always plan ahead,” Pickering said.
