June is National Aphasia Awareness Month; Mayor Donna Deegan will recognize the millions of Americans living with aphasia. Aphasia is a communication disorder often caused by stroke that can affect a person's ability to speak, understand, read, or write, but it does not affect intelligence. Former DCPS Police Chief Greg Burton who worked for JSO for 27 years had a major stroke in 2023. He survived, but woke up with global aphasia Lakesha Burton, his wife, has been by side loving him, learning about the condition and empowering him to do everything he desires to do! Lakesha is with us this morning along with Jodi Morgan, the co-founder of The Aphasia Center of Jacksonville.
