Mother’s Day weather can bring some big weather swings in years past

This year will be hotter than most in Jacksonville

This Sunday will be warmer than most days to celebrate Mother's Day.

Mother’s Day is always celebrated on the second Sunday of May to honor moms and maternal figures for all their sacrifices and love. This May 14, the weather will be hotter than usual for families coming together to celebrate the women who have made a difference in their lives.

Weather records for Jacksonville exist decades before 1914 when Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating Mother’s Day to be held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday. The weather in Jacksonville is typically drier than other months this time of year for Mother’s Day averaging .10 of an inch.

The three wettest days on May 14, were:

2.02 in 1918

1.95 in 2009

1.75 in 2012

The weather on Mother’s Day sees an average high of 86 with a low of 63.  The weather is generally mild and pleasant, compared to the following three months when the average highs reach the low 90s.

But there can also be large swings in the heat. For instance, in 1967, Mother’s Day reached a record 99 degrees. The heat wave that year lasted for five days with temperatures 95 degrees or higher. The day before Mother’s Day reached 100 degrees marking the earliest arrival of triple-digit heat in the city’s history.

This Sunday will likely start out at 64 so don’t worry about any cool snaps this year like on the coldest Mother’s Day which reached 47 in 2013.

If you are planning an outdoor activity for Mother’s Day, such as a picnic or a hike, be sure to pack some sunscreen and you can leave the jacket or umbrella in the closet.

Temps will heat into the low 90s with mostly sunny conditions.

No matter what the weather is like, Mother’s Day is a special day to celebrate the women who have made a difference in our lives. So take some time to show your mom how much you appreciate her, and make her day one to remember.

Here are some ideas for activities you can do on Mother’s Day, regardless of the heat:

  • Go for a walk or hike in nature
  • Have a picnic in the park
  • Go to the movies
  • Go shopping
  • Have a spa day
  • Cook a special meal
  • Write a heartfelt letter or poem
  • Give her a gift
  • Spend quality time together

The most important thing is to spend time with your mom and let her know how much you love and appreciate her.
