FLORIDA – If you’ve been soaking up the unseasonably warm weather in February, enjoy it while it lasts. The taste of spring that has sent temperatures soaring into the mid-80s will soon give way to a more typical February feel as a cold front sweeps in this weekend.
This week has felt more like early June than early February, with highs running 10 to 15 degrees above the historical average of 68°F. Every day so far this month has been warmer than normal—a stark contrast to January’s frequent chills. But change is coming with a pair of cold fronts.
After Wednesday and Thursday’s mid-80s heat, a milder cooldown arrives just in time for the weekend, dropping highs back into the 70s. That first front won’t pack much of a punch, but it will be enough to knock us out of 80-degree territory. Then, a second and stronger cold front rolls in on Sunday, bringing a round of rain before delivering a more noticeable cool-down.
By early next week, Jacksonville will settle into more seasonable temperatures, with highs returning to the 60s and low 70s—right in line with February’s long-term average. Nights will also feel different as lows retreat into the 40s instead of the muggy, fog-prone conditions of recent days.
And here’s one comforting thought: unlike January’s frequent flirtations with frost, this cooldown will be mild, keeping any real freeze at bay while eliminating those balmy, foggy mornings.
While the return to normal may last through next weekend it’s a timely reminder that winter isn’t quite over yet.
