Strong to severe storms expected through this evening
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Weather Authority team at News4JAX reports that showers and storms are already on the radar for the Jacksonville area, but this is just the beginning of a very active weather pattern today. According to News4JAX’s meteorologist, heavier storms are expected as the afternoon goes on, with the potential for strong to severe weather.
General storms are expected from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m., with the highest risk for severe conditions—including damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and heavy rainfall—between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. As of this morning, pockets of rain have already moved through areas like World Golf Village and the coast, and more widespread rain is forecast to develop later in the day as showers track further inland and intensify.
Most neighborhoods were dry to start the day, but more showers are moving east, and the risk for severe storms will increase this afternoon and evening. Be prepared for changing conditions and keep an eye on Exact Track 4D radar for the latest updates.
Low pressure system could become tropical—but rain is the main story
The uptick in storm activity is tied to a low-pressure area moving into North Florida from the Gulf. News4JAX’s meteorologist explains that while there is a chance this system could become tropical in nature—estimated at 10 percent in the next 48 hours and 30 percent over the next week by the National Hurricane Center—its main impact is already being felt in the form of increased rain and storminess.
Whether or not this system develops further, it’s bringing plenty of moisture and instability to the Jacksonville area. It is forecast to move west to east, bringing rain through much of North Florida and into Alabama as the week begins. News4JAX’s Weather Authority will continue to monitor the system in case development chances change.
Nineties, nineties, and more nineties: Temperature trends this week
Despite the rain, the summer heat is not letting up anytime soon. Jacksonville is sitting above average today with a high near 94 degrees (compared to the typical 92 degrees). Slightly cooler conditions are expected Tuesday and Wednesday, but temperatures are forecast to climb back into the mid-90s by Thursday and stick around for at least the next seven days.
The forecast also calls for rain chances every day through the week, so it’s smart to plan for both wet weather and summer sizzle. Gusty winds could accompany the strongest storms, especially later today. While a breeze would be welcome, most winds today will come from thunderstorm outflows.
