Jacksonville braces for dangerous heat advisory: highs near 100 and health risks top concerns

Weather Authority tips for keeping cool and safe as extreme temperatures and heat-related illnesses threaten the area

Heat advisory in effect across Jacksonville and nearby communities

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville is under a heat advisory until 7 p.m., according to meteorologist Katie Garner from the News4JAX Weather Authority team. Exact Track 4D graphics show temperatures already rising fast across the region, with the afternoon expected to bring highs hovering near 98 degrees. Some neighborhoods may even tip into the 100-degree mark. Those temperature spikes are making it feel much hotter, with “feels like” readings estimated to reach 104 to 105 degrees.

The Weather Authority confirms that the latest forecast has Orange Park, St. Augustine, and areas from Jacksonville into coastal Georgia facing the same dangerous pattern. Areas that received downpours and slightly cooler temperatures last week are now back to typical summer sizzle as a ridge of high pressure clears out the clouds. While the forecast calls for mostly sunny skies today and tomorrow, everybody should be prepared for sticky, oppressive heat through the entire weekend.

Keeping everyone safe during extreme heat: Watch for signs of heat-related illness

With the heat advisory in place, News4JAX meteorologist Katie Garner reminds everyone to check on one another, not just for your comfort but for your health. Kids, pets, and older adults are especially at risk when temperatures and humidity soar. She cautions that stepping outside during the peak mid-day hours could lead to serious problems like dehydration or heat exhaustion, especially for young children and pets out for a walk.

“Heat-related illness, not just for you, for your pets, the kids, the elderly. Check on everybody,” Garner said during the morning forecast. Her advice? Walk your dog early, always take extra water, and be alert for any signs of overheating. For pet owners, it’s worth remembering that animals are sensitive to pavement and can quickly become overheated. If your pup doesn’t want to keep going, it may be time to pick them up and head back home.

Forecast trends, summer patterns, and tips for beach safety

Despite the heat, it’s not all doom and gloom for those looking to soak up some sunshine. Today’s beach forecast calls for blue skies, plenty of sun, and moderate rip current risk along First Coast beaches. While scattered pop-up storms are possible later today and into the weekend, News4JAX’s meteorologist expects they will be brief and not impact most outdoor plans.

Looking ahead, temperatures are forecast to stay high through Sunday before dropping back to the low and mid-90s with slightly increased rain chances by Wednesday. The storm chances next week are currently estimated at around 50 percent, but the severe heat is expected to remain the bigger threat through at least Monday.
