Jacksonville braces for heavy rain: flash flood and storm risks highlighted by Meteorologist Katie Garner

Flooding, storms, and tough surf likely for coastal areas

Rain and storms in the forecast

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – From Meteorologist Katie Garner:

I’ve been watching the clouds come in, and it’s shaping up to be a soggy couple of days here in Jacksonville, along with much of northeast Florida and southeast Georgia. Right now, it’s cloudy at Jacksonville Airport and over at the Guy Harvey Resort in St. Augustine. We’ve had some strong breezes and choppy surf, but conditions were still mostly dry earlier this morning.

But don’t expect that to last. Steadier rainfall is expected to move through the area, with showers likely increasing through the afternoon and into the evening. Storms could join the mix, which might bring stronger wind gusts—especially noticeable in Georgia, where they could top out around 30 mph.

If your kids have to stop at the bus or you’re heading out after 12 p.m., keep an umbrella or poncho handy. My forecast calls for rain totals by the end of this stretch reaching about an inch in St. Mary’s, an inch and a quarter in Jacksonville, two to two and a half in St. Augustine, and close to two inches in Mayport.

Flash flooding and rip currents

One thing to watch for: the risk of flash flooding. As tracked on Exact Track 4D, the threat zone reaches from St. Mary’s down the coastline to Palm Coast, including Jacksonville itself. When you add in the expected rainfall, it’s smart to stay alert for changing conditions, especially near streams, drainage areas, or the beach.

The rip current risk is high along the coast as well. The breeze and incoming surf could make for dangerous swimming, so be cautious near the water today and through the weekend.

Weekend and gardening outlook

As we look toward the weekend, rain chances are expected to taper off just a bit. The forecast brings a 30% chance of showers on Saturday, dropping to just 20% by Sunday as drier air moves in.

Temperatures will hover in the 70s and 80s, and if you’ve been waiting to get into the garden, rainfall the next few days means you probably won’t need to water much. Expect to start seeing sunshine and warmer temperatures—mid-80s—as we head into next week.
