JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A WEATHER AUTHORITY ALERT DAY is in effect through 1 p.m. Sunday for bitterly cold temperatures across our area.
As we head into Sunday morning, an arctic air mass is fully in control across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, and it’s not just cold, it’s dangerously cold.
A WIND ADVISORY is in effect for a large portion of our area with strong northwest winds continuing to gust between 30 and 40 mph, driving wind chill values down into the single digits and low teens, with some inland spots briefly feeling even colder.
For some perspective, 39 mph would be considered tropical storm force winds if we were having tropical weather.
Temperatures will be in the mid-20s, but thanks to those high winds, wind chill values will easily drop into the single digits and teens by Sunday morning.
An EXTREME COLD WARNING is in effect due to the bitterly cold wind chills. Highs on Sunday will only be in the low to mid 40s. With the wind it will feel like the 30s in the afternoon.
So conditions early Sunday will feel harsh and unforgiving if you’re heading out to work, church, or morning activities.
Frost and freeze impacts are ongoing, and this is a serious threat to pets, plants, and exposed pipes.
Sunshine returns later in the morning, but don’t let that fool you, it stays cold all day, with afternoon highs only near the low 40s and a persistent breeze keeping it feeling much colder.
The takeaway for Sunday morning: layer up, limit time outdoors, and treat this like true winter weather, because for our area, it absolutely is.
Monday will feature sunshine and cool temperatures. Highs for the day will be in the low to mid 50s with a freeze in the morning.
Another disturbance could bring showers to area by the middle to the week with temperatures climbing into the 60s on Tuesday and Wednesday.
