Sunday brings more sunshine and warmer weather

Coastal areas face increased rip current risks along with a few showers early next week

Sunday's surface map.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The rest of the day will feature a mix of sun and clouds with temperatures near 70 degrees. Tonight will be partly cloudy and cool with temperatures near 50 degrees. Patchy fog will be possible Sunday morning and could be dense in some spots.

Sunday's high temperatures.

High pressure will move back into our area on Sunday which means we will see more sunshine and warmer temperatures. Highs on Sunday will be in the low to mid 70s.

Rainfall forecast over the next week.

Warmer temperatures are on the way as we head into the first full week of March. Highs for the most part will be in the 70s and 80s with little rain in sight. We certainly need rain due to the ongoing extreme drought.

Areas along the coast over the next few days will have the best chance of seeing a few spotty showers due to an onshore wind. The increase in wind along the coast early next week will also increase the risk for rip currents.

The latest drought monitor

Speaking of the drought, the latest drought monitor reflects the overall pattern over the past few months. The area of “extreme” drought continues to expand in coverage each week and now covers most of our area.

Lunar eclipse information.

Don’t forget to look up at the moon early Tuesday morning. A total lunar eclipse will occur on Tuesday, March 3. In fact, this will be the last total lunar eclipse on Earth until New Year’s Eve 2028-2029. The total eclipse begins at 6:04 AM with the maximum at 6:34 a.m. The total eclipse ends at 7:03 a.m. The moon will be known as a “blood moon” and will look red.

A total lunar eclipse is when Earth’s hard shadow covers the entire surface of the Moon. When this occurs, it is called a blood moon because the moon turns red!

Make sure to find an unobstructed view, such as an open field or a park. If you have binoculars or a telescope, you will be able to enhance your view. As mentioned above, make sure to keep an eye on the weather forecast for Tuesday morning. A clear sky will provide the best viewing opportunity.
