Storm timing in southeast Georgia, northeast Florida: What to expect this afternoon, tonight

Storms to ramp up this afternoon, taper overnight

Saturday storms

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A stormy afternoon and evening is on the way, with heavy rain, flooding concerns and gusty winds all in the forecast.

Storm activity is expected to pick up along the Atlantic coast after 3 p.m. A sea breeze off the Atlantic will converge with winds off the St. Johns River, creating storms westward. Eventually, that activity is expected to collide with a Gulf breeze near or just east of I-75.

Heavy rain could pile up fast

Some areas could see back-to-back rounds of heavy rain this afternoon, raising the risk of localized flooding. The US-301 corridor and southeast Georgia are going to be most affected, with a 30 to 50 percent chance of 3 inches or more of rain falling within just a few hours this evening.

The bigger concern with these storms is strong to severe downbursts with wind gusts between 40 and 60 mph.

Storm winds down around 10 p.m.
