Storms, high heat returns: what Southeast Georgia, Northeast Florida can expect going into the holiday weekend

Evening forecast

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – It’s a scattered, spotty kind of day across Florida. Showers are popping up mostly at the beaches, with more rain expected to push inland during the afternoon hours.

Overnight lows will hover around 70 degrees inland and climb to the upper 70s along the coast. Clouds will thicken up overnight, making it feel warm and muggy heading into Friday.

Friday: Storms target inland Northeast Florida

Two things to watch Friday: afternoon thunderstorms and increasing rip current risk.

By Friday afternoon, storms will start firing up over inland Northeast Florida. Expect lightning, heavy rain, and gusty winds. Be sure to have your indoor location planned for when lightning is nearby.

Meanwhile, rip currents will pose an elevated risk at area beaches. Check beach flags before getting in the water, and always swim with a buddy and near a lifeguard.

Inland areas will see highs in the mid-to-upper 90s, while coastal spots stay in the upper 80s to lower 90s. Factor in the humidity and it will feel like 100 to 106 degrees. Drink water, limit time outdoors during the hottest parts of the day, and check on elderly neighbors and family members.

Overnight Friday into Saturday will offer little relief, with lows staying in the mid-70s inland and upper 70s near the coast.

America turns 250!

What were scattered storms on Friday become numerous, widespread storms on Saturday, especially south of I-10.

Expect frequent lightning, heavy downpours, and the potential for localized flooding in neighborhoods and low-lying areas.

The dangerous heat continues Saturday as well. Highs again reach the mid-to-upper 90s inland, with heat index values potentially hitting 100 to 108 degrees. If storms are slow to develop in your area, the heat could become dangerous enough that weather officials issue a Heat Advisory.

Rip current risks remain elevated at beaches through the weekend.
