Hundreds of boats removed after Irma

42 boats have been removed in Northeast Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – More than 850 vessels impacted by Hurricane Irma have been removed from state waters, the U.S. Coast Guard announced Monday.

The majority of the 858 boats that have been removed were in the Florida Keys, where 637 vessels have been taken out of the water.

The Coast Guard said many of the vessels have been removed by the boat owners themselves.

“The process is made more efficient by proactive citizens who have either removed their vessels or have contacted the Vessel Removal Hotline to assist in our efforts,” Coast Guard Cmdr. JoAnne Hanson said in a prepared statement.

A total of 19 boats have been removed from Miami-area waters, while 160 have been take out of waters from Collier County to north of St. Petersburg.

In the Northeast, 42 boats have been removed, and Coast Guard crews on Monday were overseeing the removal of a 55-foot recreational fishing vessel at Fort George Island Marina in Jacksonville.
