Listen up: One sure sign of attraction

How to know if the other person is interested in you

If you've ever wondered about how attracted someone may be to you, try listening to his or her voice. A recent European study found both men and women change the tone when speaking to members of the opposite sex they are attracted to.

"The higher the voice goes, the less attractive that is, it's really in the lower register guys are gonna talk like this rather than like this in order to draw attraction of female partners, for instance," said Dr. Scott Bea, a clinical psychiatrist at Cleveland Clinic.

Bea said researchers studied more than 200 people to figure this all out. They used video and audio recordings to determine if a man or a woman's voice changed when speaking to an attractive or unattractive member of the opposite sex.

What they found was both men and women change their voices when speaking to attractive counterpart, with men having a tendency to lower their voices when responding to attractive women.

But changes in your voice can actually work against you. However, Bea said you can save yourself if you can keep your nerves under control.

"In instances where people are too struck with what's going on inside them, rather than outside them, their voice may modulate up as part of an anxiety response, in which case they may become a less-attractive partner actually," he said.

And when that person is speaking to you, experts say they may reveal other signs they are attracted to you like:

  • They use your name a lot during the conversation.
  • They hold eye contact with you.
  • They're flushed in their cheeks and maybe even their lips.

As you know, men and women are not the same. Experts say women are able to send more signals of attraction than men. A woman typically has more flirting habits, and according to research, most are done intentionally.
