Bras to fit breast cancer survivors

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Melanie Anderson is a regional manager with Dillards Department Stores. She specializes in lingerie and explained that most women that walk into a lingerie department have something in common.

"Eight out of 10 women still wear the wrong size bra," Anderson said.

Dillards trained fit specialists put hundreds of women into the right size bras and in doing so, made a discovery and a big change.

"We noticed that during our normal fittings everyday we are seeing a lot of survivors come into the store that have had a mastectomy or lumpectomy." Anderson said.

Even though a fitting for a breast cancer survivor is similar to a regular fitting, the options used to be very different. That's why Dillards just started carrying Amoena products. Amoena offers high quality, breast forms and products just for women who have had surgery.

"It's very exciting," Anderson explained. "We're honored to be able to service that client at the next level and in all stages of her life."

There are just a few racks with bras made specifically for the forms or prosthetic. But store managers wanted to offer more. They know that a lot of women want to wear something sexy or feminine and they're making that possible for survivors after surgery.

"We can fit her in any bra we have on our floor. So if she likes something fancy, then we can accommodate by sewing in a pocket in with our alterations here in the store."

That means they can make any bra they have in the lingerie department work with the Amoena forms. Dillards is working with insurance companies to get the Amoena products covered for women who've had surgery.
