Is your child in the right seat? AAP updates car seat guidelines

Handy chart expected to help parents

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The American Academy of Pediatrics has updated its car seat guidelines.

Officials at the AAP realized that parents needed help, so they created a chart to make their system easy to understand.

The chart provides a ton of information, including what sort of car seat your infant should be using and what seat your child should be in, based on age and weight.

It’s important to make sure your child has the right seat and setup, because car crashes are a leading killer of kids ages 1 to 13, the AAP said. Between 2007 and 2011, 3,661 children nationwide died in wrecks. Of those kids, one in three were unrestrained.

The AAP said no one seat is the best or safest. It’s all about what’s right for your child and your vehicle. The organization discouraged parents from deciding on a seat using price as the only factor. A higher price doesn’t necessarily mean the seat is safer.

Avoid used seats, as well. If you don’t know the history of a car seat, you shouldn’t buy or borrow it, the group recommended.
