Tipflation: Is tipping out of control?

Nearly three-quarters of Americans say they feel tipping is now expected in more places compared to five years ago. But a Pew Research poll says that even as we’re asked to tip more, few people know when to tip and how much.

Some say the tipping backlash has begun.

Who should you tip? Nerd Wallet says to aim for 15% to 20% for servers in sit-down restaurants. If you’re doing take-out 10% is plenty. The same goes for baristas, add 15% for food and grocery delivery drivers and rideshare drivers. Plan on an extra 15% for your hair stylist and massage therapist.

When is it okay not to tip? Etiquette experts say as a blanket rule you don’t need to tip anyone who earns a salary or performs a trade. That means your plumber, cable technician, lawn guys, pool cleaner, and UPS. Amazon, FedEx, or mail carriers do not get tipped.

What you do is up to you, and always remember, it’s always OK to skip the tip.

Worldwide, Americans are known to be great tippers, but nine countries don’t expect you to leave a tip, and three where it’s an insult. People in Australia, Switzerland, Argentina, Belgium, French Polynesia, and Singapore do not expect gratuities. While Japan, China, and South Korea think of it as an insult.
