Boy Shot During Robbery Of Family Dies

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 10-year-old boy struck by a stray bullet during an armed robbery of his family on May 6 has died.

Police said Drevon Ricks was injured when his father shot a man with a shotgun who was attempting to rob the family as they sat in their car outside a Westside city park, waiting to enroll the boy in a city summer camp.

Police said 18-year-old Jabray Davias Jones was killed as he was robbing the family of five about 2:30 a.m. near McGirts Creek Regional Park, at the corner of Checkmate Lane and 118th Street.

Ricks was hospitalized in critical condition after being hit by a bullet believed fired from his father's gun.

Homicide detectives have not completed the investigation, but have said the shooting of the boy appeared to be an accidental result of the justifiable shooting of Jones.
