Teen Slaying Suspects Mentioned In Stolen Guns Report

Investigators Believe Guns Recovered In Killing Were Same Reported Stolen

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A stolen weapons report filed Saturday by a Jacksonville man mentions two teenagers charged in the shooting death of a 17-year-old classmate.

The State Attorney's Office said Monday they believe they've found the weapons used to kill Makia Coney, and they said they believe they are the same guns that were reported stolen.

James Cumbie told the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office that two .44-caliber revolvers and ammunition for the weapons were missing from separate locked tool boxes kept in the closet of his home's master bedroom. Cumbie said the outside locks had been broken off.

Cumbie said the reason he checked the boxes was that he remembered his son had friends over to work out in the garage. He recalled two boys named "Charles" and "Connor" coming over to the house to lift weights.

On Saturday morning police said Charles Southern, 17, and Connor Pridgen, 16, admitted to shooting Coney, 17, after leaving school with her on Wednesday afternoon. All three were students at University Christian School. Cumbie told JSO about the stolen weapons hours after the two were arrested.

Cumbie told police only three other people knew the guns were in the tool boxes: his wife and his two sons. He also told police none of the children who came to the residence to work out was allowed upstairs, and they wouldn't have known the guns were there unless they were told.

The State Attorney's Office said Monday that one of the suspects led police to where one gun had been disposed of in St. Johns County. Investigators said the other gun was found in the home of the second suspect.

The report also mentioned a neighbor who told police she saw two people on the roof of the Cumbie home nearly two weeks ago. The neighbor asked the two what they were doing and they told her they were trying to get inside the house. She told police one of the individuals looked like Cumbie's son.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has not said what kind of gun was used to shoot and kill Makia Coney. When announcing the murder charges, police said they were still investigating where the two teens obtained the guns used in the crime.

Both Southern and Pridgen are being held without bond at the Duval County Juvenile Detention Center facing murder charges. State Attorney Angela Corey issued a statement Sunday saying her office would file papers on Tuesday to have the charges transferred to adult court.
