Single-car wreck closes Greenland Road

Man has life threatening injuries after crash early Wednesday morning

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Greenland Road was closed between St. Augustine Road to U.S. 1 for several hours after an early morning wreck near Mandarin High School.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office traffic homicide detectives responded to the wreck in Mandarin just after 5 a.m. Wednesday.

According to Detective Robert Peck, a police officer saw a car driving east erratically on Greenland Road. The officer made a U-turn to catch up with the driver, but when he saw the vehicle again it had hit two palm trees on a raised median near the 4800 block of Greenland Road.

Peck said speed may have been a factor in the crash.  Police would also check to see if alcohol was involved.
The driver was taken to Shands Jacksonville Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The identity of the driver and whether or not alcohol played a factor in this wreck is still not known. We will update the story as soon as new information is available.
