Twenty of those stores are in northeast Florida.

Calling the closures "key strategic actions to strengthen its U.S. portfolio," Delhaize America will also rebrand other stores in its portfolio, close a distribution center in Tennessee and increase a store-brand strategy in at least 600 of its remaining stores.
The company said all affected stores will close within 30 days.

In addition, the company will convert the Food Lion store in Lake City to a Harvey's store, and the Food Lion store in Gainesville and the one in Waycross will be closed.
About 4,900 positions will be eliminated across the Belgium-based company's network, although employees will be encouraged to apply for other jobs in the company.
"While these were difficult decisions given the impact on our associates, customers and communities, we believe these actions will enable us to better serve our customers in our markets with high density, while positioning the company for future growth," said Ron Hodge, CEO of Delhaize America.
