Jacksonville store reports rising scooter sales

Gas prices have people changing the way they travel

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – As gas prices rise, there's one mode of transportation that can go very far on a small amount of fuel. Motor scooters are becoming very popular in Jacksonville, especially at Jax Motosports in Mayport.

"They look for something that gets great gas mileage. That is street legal. That gets up to speed. Most of our scooters go 65 mph, get 70 miles per gallon," said Jax Motorsport employee Sarah Christenbury.

Employees said the store has sold scooters to customers who are looking to save money on gas.

"It's a lot of interest and we've sold quite a few. We actually ship all over the United States, so we've actually sold a scooter in California," said Christenbury.

While the cost of gas each month might lower with a scooter, there is another cost to think about: your safety.

Police agencies across the country have reported a spike in scooter accidents. One happened Monday morning on U.S. 1 in St. Johns County.

Channel 4 Crime Analyst and Safety Expert Ken Jefferson said there's a lot you can do to ensure safety on a scooter

"If you going to put that on the road, you need to wear a helmet. Obey all rules of road," said Jefferson. "Make sure you have something on that's visible, like fluorescent vest and make sure other drivers can see you. This actually sits lower and difficult for other drivers to see you in rearview mirror unless they look very hard."
