Mother who shot baby in motel room sentenced to probation

7-month-old struck when AK-47 discharged during argument between mom, boyrfriend

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A mother who pleaded guilty to child abuse for shooting her 7-month-old baby in December 2010 was sentenced Friday to jail time served and two years of probation.

Brandy Purvis had been in jail since her arrest. She and her boyfriend, Justin Satterfield, were arguing in a Westside motel while he was holding an AK-47, prosecutors said.

They said during the altercation, the gun discharged, and the couple's baby was wounded in the leg.

Satterfield has also pleaded guilty in the case to child abuse, weapons and drug charges. He'll be sentenced next month.

The baby was placed in Department of Children and Families foster care after the shooting.
