Kids accidentally drink bleach at day care

Substitute teacher's aide served children water mixed with bleach

Several children were hospitalized after they accidentally drank a mixture of bleach and water at a day care center.

More than two dozen kids and two adults at Growing Tree Learning Center II in Jersey City consumed the cleaning solution when a substitute teacher's aide served it to them, thinking it was water, The Associated Press reported.

A spokesman for Jersey City Medical Center-Barnabas Health said the hospital received a call a few minutes before 11 a.m. Several ambulances were sent to the day care center.

The spokesman said most of the 28 people treated had complained of lightheadedness, mild nausea and stomachaches. All the children and adults had been released by 3 p.m.

The state Department of Children and Families is investigating the incident.
