Woman found shot to death in Westside ditch

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman was found shot to death in a ditch on the Westside on Friday morning, according to Jacksonville police.

Homicide investigators were called to Yellow Water and Wells roads about 9:50 a.m.

Police would not say if the woman, identified as 44-year-old Lawanna McDaniel, was shot there or her body dumped there.

Eric Crawford said he was riding in a car on his way to work with his uncle when they found the woman's body, which police said had been there less than 24 hours.

"I'm still shaking, still upset, aggravated," said Crawford, who makes wooden pallets off Yellow Water Road. "My uncle came and picked us up, and as soon as he came, we were going by, we were looking in the ditches and stuff, and my old lady seen her lying there. So we backed up, looked, we beeped the horn. She didn't move, so we called the police."

Crawford said the woman was found lying face down with her dress pulled up and blood in the back of her head.

"I sort of figured something wasn't right, she wasn't moving," Crawford said. "I seen blood spots in the back of her head out the window. I said, 'Uncle Larry, take me back,' because when I see stuff like that I start crying."

The road was blocked off while police investigated.

There are not a lot of homes in the area.

Anyone with any information about the woman's killing is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
