1 killed in Alachua County school bus crash

No children hurt in crash on U.S. 301 south of Waldo

WALDO, Fla. – A woman was killed Thursday morning when her SUV crashed into the back of a stopped school bus at the intersection of U.S. 301 and County Road 1471, south of Waldo, in Alachua County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Mersha N. Edwards, 39, was driving her Hyundai Tucson northbound in the outside lane of U.S. 301 and hit the back of a school bus that was stopped with its signals activated.

The bus was picking up children at a bus stop.

The FHP report said none of the nine students on board the bus or the other students boarding the bus at the time of the crash were taken to the hospital.

The driver died at the scene. It's unclear why she did not see the stopped school bus.
