Jacksonville mother of slain woman speaks gun violence

Sharnice Wilson, Marquisha Phillips killed after gunshots fired into home

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – President Barack Obama mentioned the issue of gun violence in his eulogy Friday in Charleston. Those remarks come at a time when local police released the names of several victims of gun violence in Jacksonville.

It's a topic that's claiming the lives of many in the U.S., and at the funeral for one of the victims of the Charleston shooting, Obama brought the issue to the forefront.

"For too long, we've been blind to the unique mayhem that gun violence inflicts upon this nation," Obama said. "The children traumatized and fearful every day as they walk to school. The husband who will never feel his wife's warm touch."

For Ursula Johnson, a mother in Jacksonville who will never see her daughter again, those words are personal.

"It's hard, but I think about all the good times. I look at her pictures. I look at the videos that we made of her," Johnson said. "I'm just looking at her children on a day-to-day basis. That brings joy in the sense that she's still here."

Ursula's daughter, Sharnice Wilson (pictured, right), and her godmother, Marquisha Phillips, lost their lives after someone fired gunshots through their home on Chestnut Avenue last month. Police are still looking for her daughter's killer.

"Being a Christian, the Bible says to forgive, so I forgive you, but turn yourself in," Johnson said.

This week, police released the identities of three other shooting victims in the last month.

Daniel Sinkhorn was shot and killed on Beach Boulevard. Juan Moralea was shot and killed on Kona Avenue. The most recent victim was Zarius Dunson, who was fatally shot on West Fifth Street.

"Put down the guns. Stop the violence," Johnson said. "Get involved in extracurricular activities, whether at school, church, something positive with your life."
