Police ID man found dead in apartment on Hyde Park Road

Man found dead in Magnolia Terrace apartments after reports of gunfire

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man was found dead Wednesday morning at the Magnolia Terrace apartments on Hyde Park Road, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Neighbors near the apartment complex reported hearing multiple gunshots Tuesday night.

Officers responding to the reports of shots fired, and found David Goldsmith, 49, dead about 9 a.m. Wednesday inside one of the apartment units.

Homicide detectives are investigating Goldsmith's death.

A man sped up to the crime scene Wednesday screaming and was subdued by several officers after he tried to run inside the apartment. The man said his father was killed and that he found out from his mother and rushed over to find out what happened.

Officers detained the 22-year-old man while they investigated, and he was later charged with resisting an officer with violence.

There are two day care facilities in the area, and neighbors said they were disturbed by the violence.

“This not the first time, and I know it's probably not going to be the last,” said a neighbor who asked to be identified only as Judy. “I got woken up by gunshots. I heard three, then picked up the phone, and while I was on the phone, I heard at least seven more.”

Police said they aren’t sure if Tuesday night’s gunshots are related to Goldsmith's death.

Either way, people in the neighborhood said they are scared that there’s a killer on the streets, and they hope the violence stops.

“There's (no respect for life). It doesn't seem like it. It's bad, man,” neighbor Juan Johnson said

“All I can do is pray and hope they get it under control,” Judy said.

Detectives aren’t releasing many details. They said they’re still following up on leads and talking with witnesses.

Anyone with information about the man's death is asked to call JSO at 904-630-0500 or Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
